How to make Homemade Nut Butter of all kinds! No need to buy store brands, you can make every nut butter at home easily and in just a few minutes!
HOW TO MAKE NUT BUTTER
It couldn’t be more simple and easy to make any type of nut butter at home with just 1 ingredient! I’ve been making these for years and this guide will show you how to make all kinds of different nut butters, including sunflower seed butter!
To make homemade nut butter, you need a quality food processor. One that is large enough to accommodate nuts and pulverize them into a silky smooth texture.
MY FAVORITE NUT BUTTERS
- Raw Cashew Butter
- Roasted Almond Butter
- Cinnamon Ginger Almond Butter
- Chocolate Sunflower Seed Butter
- Walnut Butter
- Pecan Butter
- Hazelnut Butter
- Coconut Butter
RAW CASHEW BUTTER
Cashew butter is one of my favorite ingredients for baking. It is the most neutral in flavor and has a naturally sweet, vanilla flavor to it. It is also light in color, so it won’t make your baked goods dark.
I use it mostly in cookies, like these Cashew Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, Vegan Gluten-free Sugar Cookies, Iced Oatmeal Cookies and even Strawberry Cream Cheese!
ROASTED ALMOND BUTTER
My most used nut butter for baking. It is what I use in a ton of my cookie recipes to replace butter and oil and make them oil-free.
Some of my favorites are these Almond Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies and these Best Ever Vegan Gluten-free Brownies.
CINNAMON GINGER ROASTED ALMOND BUTTER
If you are looking for a next-level almond butter to liven up your taste buds and toast, this is it!
CHOCOLATE SUNFLOWER SEED BUTTER
This is for those who love chocolate, but can’t have nuts. Enter the most luscious chocolate sunflower seed butter made from raw sunflower seeds. This stuff is addictive!
When I created this, it is what inspired me to create my popular Best Vegan Gluten-free Fudgy Brownies.
WALNUT BUTTER
Walnut butter is extremely smooth and runny, very similar to oil, so it makes a wonderful replacement for oil in some recipes, like my Healthy Vegan Cinnamon Rolls! I do not recommend walnut butter by itself, as it is quite bitter. Moreso, I make it to use mainly in baking as an oil replacement.
However, if you wanted to flavor it, I’d add a pinch of sea salt and some coconut sugar to sweeten. You do not want to add a syrup or liquid sweetener to walnut butter, or any nut butter for that matter (unless in larger quantities), because the heat of the processor tends to make it seize up and turn into a stiff mess.
PECAN BUTTER
Pecan butter is very similar to walnut butter, in that it is quite runny and smooth. The main difference is that pecan butter tastes quite sweet and walnut butter tastes much more bitter. I can eat pecan butter by the spoon, it is so good!
One of the best cookie recipes I’ve ever written was years ago using pecan butter as a base for these chocolate chip cookies. It was a brilliant moment, if I do say so myself, lol, to replace oil/butter in my cookie recipe. I had only been baking vegan for about a year at the time and had no idea if it would work, but let me tell you, they are a cookie like no other.
Every time I serve them, I literally watch people moan and their eyes roll back as they devour each bite, haha.
HAZELNUT BUTTER
Hazelnut butter is fantastic and very bold in flavor. It is known for being a perfect compliment with chocolate. Hello vegan nutella! But did you know it also goes great with cinnamon? Check out these Cinnamon Vegan Hazelnut Chocolate Chip Cookies!
The steps to make the actual hazelnut butter are listed under step 1 on the cookie recipe card.
COCONUT BUTTER
I use coconut butter in so many recipes on my blog! I love how buttery it makes baked goods taste. It is excellent in these Gingersnaps and in these Vegan Chocolate Chip Cupcakes and these Vegan Gluten-free Vanilla White Cupcakes! And of course, Coconut Butter Brownies!
It also hardens, so it works well in recipes that need firming up, like this Vanilla Buttercream Frosting.

Thank you for the directions for making my own nut/seed butters (other than peanut butter). I tried making almond butter that turned out crap (didn’t have your site then).
I see that you buy your almond flour. Have you made your own flour as yet?

Hi John! This comment made me laugh, haha. Roasting the nuts makes a huge difference.
I have made just almond meal by blending up whole raw almonds but it’s never usually as fine as the store. Blanched almond flour I’ll only buy from the store, too complicated to do at home and it’ll never turn out as fine.

I excitedly printed out all the recipes except for the sunflower and coconut butters which I couldn’t find. (found the hazelnut butter one within the cookie recipe) Am I not looking in the right place? Can’t wait to use these butters in your other recipes!
