I’m currently into lots of dips and finger foods and sauces. I have been putting them on pizzas instead of traditional pizza sauce and literally eating this one in particular, with a spoon. I think it’s no secret that I love barbecue sauce, by the evidence of so many barbecue recipes on my blog. My favorite, and one of my most popular, is my Smoky Barbecue Sweet Potato Chickpea Burgers. You guys love that recipe, so I decided to do a little twist on that recipe and create a dip with those same flavors.
This way we can all have a really fast sweet barbecue flavored dip in just about 20 minutes. Score. Instead of using chickpeas, like in traditional hummus, I decided to use all white beans. I tried this first with chickpeas and wasn’t loving the flavor. I find chickpeas to be rather strong and really need to be hidden well. White beans not only become a ton creamier than chickpeas, they are also much milder in flavor.
White beans are the perfect choice for this Oil-Free Barbecue White Bean Hummus. This dip is not only super creamy and smooth, but also fat-free since there is no oil or tahini in it. Yes, fat-free! Indulge all you want. Honestly, with all the flavors going on here, it doesn’t need any oil or tahini. Bonus that it is a wonderful source of quality protein and fiber. Hey, we all need more fiber in our diets.
Your tastebuds will be doing a major dance party with this dip. It’s full of rich flavor, thanks to roasted garlic, worcestershire sauce, vinegar, liquid smoke, hot sauce and some seasonings of course. The roasted garlic just further lends to the sweet barbecue flavor. I could eat roasted garlic on it’s own though, it’s seriously addictive stuff. My daughter and I literally went to town on this dip.
Of course, you only need 8 easy ingredients for this recipe (plus salt and a tiny amount of water).
Regarding a couple of comments/questions I’ve received….as with all my recipes, you only need 8 ingredients to make them and sometimes this will or will not include salt ‘n’ pepper and water. Sometimes I will list an optional ingredient or garnish, but these are totally optional and NOT REQUIRED to make the recipe. You have no idea how much I work to create recipes that require no more than 8 main ingredients. As with any recipe you find online or in a cookbook, there is always the optional garnishes, but they are not the base of the recipe. Just count the ingredients and you will see. As always, if you have questions, let me know and I’m more than happy to help!
Other Oil-free Vegan Hummus recipes to try:
Oil-Free Barbecue White Bean Hummus
Ingredients
- 3 medium cloves garlic (with skins still on)
- Two 15 oz cans white cannellini beans, drained & rinsed
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons vegan worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon hot sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
- 1-2 teaspoons liquid smoke
- 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1 tablespoon water
- Optional garnish: green onions and drizzle of barbecue sauce for presentation. Use this Smoky BBQ or my rich molasses one. I only did this for presentation purposes
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place the garlic cloves (with skin still on!) wrapped in foil loosely and roast for 10 minutes. This will bring out more flavor and depth and be less strong than raw garlic.
- Meanwhile, drain and rinse the beans well and add them to a food processor. Process until they are broken up.
- Add the remaining ingredients and process for a minute or so, scrape down the sides and process again for several minutes until creamy smooth. Walk away and let it process until totally smooth. I let mine go a few minutes. It will give you the creamiest dip ever.
- Taste and add any extra spice if desired. The only thing I added extra was the chili powder.
- Serve in a bowl and drizzle barbecue sauce and green onions on top if desired. I could not stop eating this dip. I loved the sweet smoky barbecue flavor with the small spicy kick. Leave feedback below after you make it!
WOW, this looks awesome! What is your fav BBQ sauce?
Hi Tracey! I linked to the one I love above, it’s super fast and easy to make, but I also love my richer molasses flavored one as well. You can pick either one. They both only take about 5 minutes to make 🙂 Thank you!
This looks AMAZING!!! Love working with liquid smoke! It adds such awesome flavor. I think the only thing I’ll have trouble finding is the Worcestershire.
Thank you so much Kaila! I agree, it really gives a different flavor than smoked paprika and made a difference in this dip. I tried it first with smoked paprika and it wasn’t as good. If you know a Whole Foods around, that is where I get my worcestershire sauce. I added a link above to the product I use within the recipe above now!
And the color is perfect for the season, girl :-)!!
Thank you so much Annie! Ha, didn’t even realize that, but yeah this is totally a Fall-colored post!
are those chips oil free?! They look AMAZING!! What brand? I can’t wait to make this recipe tomorrow
No, I wish! I bought them last week only because it was my daughter’s birthday party over the weekend and I loved how pretty they were. I do not buy these just to eat, but for a party. I get them from my local HEB, they are central market brand. They have a really clean ingredient list, but do have a little bit of oil in them. Please let me know after you make this! 😉
Did you know that Mission tostadas in blue bag are baked and all you have to do it break them up, they are also oil free. Can’t wait to try the BBQ hummus!
Oh my God, this look so good! Talk about perfect football watching food 🙂
Aww thanks so much and I agree! My daughter and I were literally eating this while watching tv the other day…yum yum!
BBQ anything should be on endless supply in my opinion! YUM! The hummus of my dreams 😉
Haha I agree completely!!
Brandi you did it, again! Wow I’m craving a white bean dip lately so I know exactly what we are talking about! Adding the BBQ sauce is such a great idea. I bet it adds a punchy flavor to this dip and so, so want to try this right now. I love all about the presentation: the swirl, the chips, the greens. That final closeup. Wow!
Thank you so much Florian! I’m so happy you love that closeup pic 🙂 Yes, making this barbecue flavored was to die for!
Yum, I love barbecue flavored things…probably because they are slightly sweet 🙂 I need to try the white beans instead of chickpeas, I’m all for creamier hummus without oil or tahini!
BBQ!! I love BBQ everything (plant based BBQ everything, of course!). This looks divine! I would not only dip things in this, but I would slather it on everything! And I love using white beans in dips too!
LOVEEEE this! I seriously need to make my own hummus! I usually only eat the roasted red pepper kind from the store, but Barbecue!!! 😉 happy dance need this in my life ASAP! and I totally love those chips you have them with they are the best! pinning!
Thank you so much Michele for such a kind comment! It’s definitely a bit different than traditional hummus, but then again, I love switching things up! I have a few other hummus recipes on my blog as well, including a red pepper hummus too that is more traditionally made! Good, but I like this one just as much! 🙂
I wasn’t sure how this could be considered hummus without at least tahini, so I looked it up. Just one little problem: hummus means chickpeas in Arabic. Since none of the ingredients in this recipe are in hummus, calling it that is a bit of a stretch.
Hi Nia, there are literally probably hundreds of recipes out there that do not use the traditional chickpeas in them and are called “hummus”, so I’m definitely not the first. 🙂 The idea is because it has the same smooth consistency of hummus. If you want to add tahini, then by all means add it. I actually made the first batch with some and it was completely not needed for flavor and I wanted to keep it fat-free. Also, the same could be said for a large amount of recipes on my blog. I love taking classic recipes, giving them twists, “makeovers”, but still keeping the wonderful flavor/consistency of traditional recipes, just without all the junk in them. I do the same with “cheesecakes”, even though I don’t use any of the traditional cheesecake ingredients, yet it tastes like one! Hope you like it if you try it, thank you!
Omg wow there are no words I am just speechless. All I can think is get in my belly. Yummmm. Seriously your pictures and presentation skills are out of this world. Top tier. Geez I wish I had a big bowl of that right now. Those chips look so beautiful wish I could eat tortilla chips but no oil for me 🙁
Awww Christina, you always say the sweetest things, thank you so much for those compliments!! That means a lot to me! About those chips, they were leftover from my daughter’s birthday party the previous weekend, definitely not a regular purchase. I just liked the colors, but yeah, they had oil so I wasn’t eating them like I was the carrots…I hate greasy chips!
Thanks again for the kind comments on my photos and styling, xoxo!
WOW!!! Sounds amazing and LOOKS perfect!!!! YUM! Totally want some!
This look excellent, Brandi. So vibrant, delish and yum. Love this is oil free too! I am literally drooling! Can’t wait to try. 🙂
SO sweet of you Anu, thank you!!
This was absolutely amazing and I suspect this will become one of my go-to dips! In place of the hot sauce, I used chipotle peppers, so good and nice and smokey like my favorite bbq sauce. And I took it for a pot-luck at work and it was gone within 15 minutes!
YAY!! I’m so happy to hear you already made it and loved it! So awesome to hear your coworkers all gobbled it up too, awesome! Mmmmm chipotle peppers sound amazing, I need to try that! Thank you so very much Kim!!
I love white bean hummus!! It’s so good and creamy. And I love that you added BBQ. I could totally see this as dinner…and lunch….and perhaps breakfast.
Yes, alll day long!!! Haha!
Yummy! This hummus looks amazing, Brandi! 🙂
I’m always looking for new dips to try, and this sounds so delicious Brandi. Such a beautiful colour too!!! Love barbecue flavours. Can’t wait to try this!
Thank you so much Harriet!
Oooh. This sounds amazing. I love the sound of a smokey hummus. And white beans instead of chickpeas — yes please! White beans are my favorite.
This hummus was everything! I had 20 minutes to whip up a snack before my hubs walked through the door, and this was perfect! So perfect in fact that he is still devouring as we speak! Thank you, Brandi!
Wonderful Courtney!! I’m so happy to hear you and hubby loved this so much, thank you so much for making it and the feedback!
Just made this and it is PHENOMENAL! This is the first of your many awesome looking recipes I have tried, and it took all of my will power to not eat the entire bowl in one sitting. Thank you so much for sharing your creations with us, and I cannot wait to try more of them!
Thank you so much Kent for such wonderful feedback! I’m so happy you found me and loved this hummus so much, thank you for taking the time to leave feedback!
I LOVE this hummus so much! It’s amazing, and it tastes way better than any other hummus I’ve made or tried. I love it with cucumbers, bell peppers, and tortilla chips. It’s perfect in a wrap, too! This hummus is such a great snack to have or make it part of a meal by spreading it on a wrap and adding veggies to it. My mom loves it, too. 🙂 I also see this hummus as a wonderful appetizer to bring to a party, event, lunch, dinner, or any type of get-together. I’ll continue to make this every week or month to have ready to eat. Thank you so much for this delicious brilliance, Brandi! <3
Aww thank you so much Jessica for your wonderful feedback and lovely photo you shared on Facebook! I’m ecstatic that this is the best hummus you’ve ever had, thank you so much for making it and leaving your feedback, I really am so appreciative!
I made this last weekend and doubled the batch. It is delicious, 4 of us have been enjoying it all week long for lunches and snacks. Never would have thought of mixing BBQ flavored with hummus! Just one question… Mine came out a kind of pukey salmon color. I was sure to use tomato paste and did not sub or add any other ingredients. Mine definitely was not as pretty as yours in the photos, so I wondered if you used something to deepen the color, such as maybe beet juice? I thought of adding some.
Hi April! Oh, I’m so happy to hear this was such a bit hit! Hmmm, really? That’s so odd. I make this quite often and it’s always this orangey color. No, I didn’t add anything else to it to darken it. Anything I add, I will always list in the ingredients. Did you add the hot sauce and liquid smoke and be sure to use tomato PASTE and not just tomato sauce? My first trial making this, I used sauce and the color was too light. Once I used tomato paste, it changed totally. All those darken it well.
Maybe my beans were just a little more watery since I used home cooked ones, and that diluted the color slightly, that is the only difference I can think of. Everything else was the same. Thanks for responding!
Oh yeah, that was likely it!
Mine came out the same salmon color you mentioned, and I used canned northern beans and tomato paste. I added some molasses and paprika to darken the color. It helped a lot. Mine was thinner than it looks in the picture because I didn’t drain the beans super well, maybe that was part of it?
Hi Amanda, yes, really make sure to drain the beans because any extra water will of course dilute the color and make it thinner. I make this quite often and it’s always thick and creamy and bright!
I made this with our supper tonight, and it was a huge hit! My husband bought cannalini beans on sale and I was wondering how to use them. The flavor was spot on, and the texture was light and smooth. I am using it for cucumber sandwiches for tomorrow’s lunches. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome recipe!
I am making this as soon as I have more tomato paste! I love variations on hummus like this — I eat so much that it’s nice to have different flavors to experience.
Wonderful Sam! I can’t wait to hear what you think! It’s always a big hit with guests and family!
I made this hummus today and it was so delicious! I like that there was the option for fat free. It was still smooth and creamy! I will definitely be making it again. My son, brother and I loved it, but my husband just liked it.
I was thinking it would go good with baked or roasted potatoes too!
So glad everybody enjoyed them, thank you Jeanette!
Oh this does look lovely, full of autumn, christmasssy colour.
This one is a bit of a find!
Thank you so much, enjoy!!
Liquid Smoke. Carcinogenic!! Omit that ingredient.
Nope, I love the stuff! Definitely not omitting it. I’m not stressing over a teaspoon of liquid smoke but you feel free to omit it in your diet.
Can I use chickpeas instead? They’re cheaper here! Thanks in advance :).
This recipe is delicious! I’ve been searching for vegan AND oil free recipes that I can share with company of all eating preferences. This recipe nailed it. My guests raved without even knowing it was so healthy. I will make this recipe again and again.
Hi Brandi,
I was looking for a great recipe for black bean hummus and remembered this recipe, that I have made and loved. So, with only one can of black beans and no tomato paste I pushed on! I subbed in low salt/low sugar Ketchup and whipped some up! Absolutely the best BBQ Blackbean Hummus I have ever had, actually the only, but your recipe has just been printed out. I will definitely use this again. Five stars from me for sure!
Thank you
