A delicious dairy-free Vegan Golden Milk Turmeric Latte full of immune-boosting vitamins and anti-inflammatory benefits! Made with fresh spices like turmeric and ginger and nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper and vanilla for a delicious and creamy latte!

2 glasses of vegan spiced turmeric lattes on a wooden tray.

VEGAN TURMERIC LATTE

Have you noticed that golden milk and turmeric has kind of taken over the internet? The first time I made a turmeric latte was probably 2 or 3 years ago when I made one to help my hubby deal with some gout pain. He refused to drink it though, lol. He was not a fan of turmeric at all. Well, today I’m calling all ginger, spice and turmeric fans. Is that you? If so, then I have a delicious healthy immune-boosting drink for you. If you are not a fan of turmeric, then just skip this post, lol. My hubby hates turmeric and you should have seen his face when I poured this into the glass. I died laughing. He was seriously grossed out. Hey, more for me.

I have been replacing my coffee lately with this dairy-free turmeric latte. Trying to begin my day with a healthier choice and needing it to be full of kick and flavor, this turmeric latte does the trick. It has a good dose of fresh ginger, fresh turmeric, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper and pure maple syrup. It’s so super healthy and anti-inflammatory, yet delicious.

Overhead image of 2 glasses of vegan spiced turmeric lattes with fresh ginger root.

I absolutely LOVE ginger and I love spices, so there is a lot of spices in this turmeric latte and it has a big kick.

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS IN A TURMERIC LATTE?

Also called Golden milk, to make this you will need:

  • plant-based milk
  • fresh ginger
  • fresh turmeric
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • black pepper
  • vanilla
  • maple syrup

HOW DO YOU MAKE A TURMERIC LATTE?

First, add all of your ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.

Second, pour the turmeric latte into a small pot over medium-low heat and simmer just until hot. Pour in a glass or mug and enjoy!

Yields 0 Serves 2 mugs

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups almond milk (see NOTES please, I used the DREAM brand which is MUCH creamier than other brands, see below for subs)
  • 1 cup (240g) filtered water
  • 1-2 tablespoons pure maple syrup (I used 1 1/2 and found it plenty sweet, as I wanted this to be really healthy)
  • 1 1/2 inch knob peeled (12g) fresh ginger, roughly chopped (This gives a nice gingery kick. Reduce to 1 inch for less spicy.)
  • 1 to 1 1/2 inch peeled knob (10-12g fresh turmeric OR 1 tsp ground dried turmeric)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper and pinch of sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • optional: pinch of cloves

Instructions

  • Add the milk, water, syrup, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, vanilla and salt to a blender or food processor. Process until completely smooth. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer to catch any shreds from the ginger and extra spices. I do this twice so it's extra smooth.
  • Taste and adjust spices or sweetener if needed. If you didn't weigh the fresh turmeric then you may need to add more to reach the bright yellow color. Add to taste preference.
  • Pour the mixture into a small pot over medium-low heat and simmer gently for a few minutes just until heated through. You do not want to thicken it or boil it, just heat it through. Strain for a smooth texture and serve.

Notes

  • Regarding the milk: Different milks will give varying results. I used the Dream brand almond milk which is higher fat and VERY creamy compared to every other almond milk brand. So that is why I didn't use all milk and did water for part of the latte. If you are using a thinner milk like oat or rice, you will want to use all milk. If wanting to use lite coconut milk, I would do half milk and half water. You may realize after the first try what you would like on the next batch. Also, weighing the ginger and turmeric will yield a more accurate result since knob sizes vary greatly. You can always adjust to taste preference as well.
  • Nutrition is based on using the Dream almond milk brand, it will greatly vary depending on milk used.

I made this this afternoon and it is truly fabulous. It’s warm from the ginger/tumeric combo and a little spicy with a really nice mouth feel. And smelled absolutely heavenly. My tummy thanks you. Confession..I drank the whole 2 servings my self at work πŸ˜‰.

Why do you put the vanilla in while it’s on the stove I stead of afterwards?

Because it’s just meant to be a mild flavor enhancer and I don’t want to taste any of the alcohol part and it slightly cooks away. You can add if afterwards if you like though!

I have been on a quest recently, to create warm, yummy lattes that are sugar free, artificial sweetener free, and dairy free. Of the dozens of recipes I’ve tried over the past few months, this is, hands down, the best yet!!! I. Am. Hooked.

Ok, my review on this turmeric latte (keeping in mind I do NOT like turmeric flavor)…I saw you post this, and it looked so warm and inviting and so healthy with all that natural goodness in it. The only issue, I don’t like turmeric. It tastes bitter to me with a pungent aftertaste I can’t get behind. But it is so good for you that I have tried it time and time again. With the same result. But I said, screw it, I need to try this because when the winter comes (if it ever comes) I need something warm and creamy and full of healthy stuff to give me what I need to start the day. So I made it. And I drank it! And although I had a touch of that bitter that I usually detect in full, all the other delicious flavors and spices actually made this drink pretty damn good. What?! I did make a few alterations, to make it something my taste buds could handle. But in general I followed the recipe. Here’s what I did:

I used a creamy cashew milk in full, no water (I really wanted that creaminess)
I used 3/4 teaspoon of both turmeric and ginger
I added 5 dates (I need the sweetness to balance the bitter I taste in turmeric)
I still added 1 tablespoon maple syrup
I only did a pinch of pepper (not usually my favorite spice in big amounts)
I upped the vanilla to 1/2 to (again help counteract the bitterness I taste from turmeric)
I added a pinch of cloves because I love them with cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg
I drizzled it with molasses on top for a fun added touch and extra fall rich flavor (and to again help with the bitterness I get in turmeric)

I blended everything in the Vitamix until hot and combined well, aaaaand because it is 90 degrees here I drank it over ice. I highly recommend this for anyone that wants the benefits of this spice but doesn’t usually like it! Brandi this is the best version of a turmeric latter I’ve seen yet!

You are hilarious! You probably could have just omitted the turmeric and then wouldn’t have had to change all that, hahaha! I know how much you hate turmeric and yes, it will be way too much if you don’t like it. Remember how much I told you Jay hates it. Yeah, mine was SUPER creamy because that Dream brand has 11g of fat in just 1 cup, basically like full-fat coconut milk, which is why I add water, otherwise it would be like drinking cream, lol! But every milk would totally give a different result so if you used cashew, I’m glad you did all milk. You should try that Dream brand sometimes, it is NOTHING like the other almond milks on the market because it’s made with mostly almonds and not 45 additives, which is why it’s so thick.
Thank you for giving this latte a try even though you hate turmeric, you crack me up! And lucky for you I have another more normal latte coming that is a dessert style and NO turmeric, bahaha!

The aroma while this golden good stuff is simmering away most be unreal with all those spices, and it’s absolutely gorgeous too! I’ve made quite a few (mediocre to be honest lol) golden milk lattes but never with fresh turmeric and ginger so I am really curious to know how different the flavor is. I’m guessing strong but also just…fresher? Will be on the lookout for it now. And the pinch of sea salt–so smart! I’ve recently gotten away from coffee too just because I find my energy much better without it and have been going hardcore with the matcha lattes, but a totally caffeine free alternative would be lovely in my life too! The thicker and creamier the better, so I might even have to try it with coconut milk πŸ™‚ Also I can totally relate to your husband, turmeric was an acquired taste for me haha. How am I not surprised you had so many people so quick to volunteer as taste testers? πŸ˜‰ Hope cookbook work is going well!

Thank you so much Natalie! It really is a flavorful latte and so good and so healthy that I’m a little obsessed with them. As much as I love coffee, it’s so not healthy, so this has been a nice change. Oh yes! Fresh ginger is a thousand times stronger and amazing than powdered. Don’t get me wrong, I love and use the powder stuff and it certainly works here, but fresh ginger is so freaking amazing. And yes, fresher tasting too. The fresh turmeric tastes better too but it’s not a huge difference in flavor, however, the medicinal properties of freshly peeled turmeric versus powdered is much greater and I’m after health benefits on this one, so the fresh is best! Would you believe the Dream Almond milk I used is creamier than the lite coconut milk?? Like, it has 11g fat in one cup!! Which is why I used it and half water…it’s basically the consistency of cream but no coconut taste, so it actually is better than coconut for this. I’m a little obsessed with this almond milk since finding it at Sprouts! You gotta try it, I am just imagining it in ice cream!!
Haha, yes, the taste testers…my phone was dinging through the night with notifications, lmao. Grateful for them, they rock.

A latte does not only mean coffee is incorporated. Those are “caffe latte” or “cafe au lait”. There are many different versions or pronunciations which can be confusing.
According to wikipedia: Variants include replacing the coffee with another drink base such as masala chai (spiced Indian tea), mate, matcha or turmeric, and other types of milk, such as soy milk or almond milk are also used.

I’ve been looking to get coffee out of my routine. I was curious if there’s any way to have this cold? Maybe that’s silly but just thought I’d check. I’m looking for something that i can throw together before work or possibly have the ingredients at work and just toss together and stir when i want a special puck-me-up.
But definitely this will be a fun treat on the weekends.

Do you think I could do dried ginger- maybe 1 tsp, similar to turmeric? Just trying to use up my dried ginger and simplify if that was possible.

Hi Allie! Definitely! If you don’t mind the flavor cold, then go for it! I prefer it hot but it is definitely still good cold too. Yes, for the ginger, start out with 1 teaspoon and taste it and see if you would like it spicier. The taste is less fresh and medicinal, but will still be yummy.

          Dear Brandi,

Thank you so much for posting this recipe. I am studying Ayurvedic Medicine and as a vegan, this is an excellent alternative to the traditional Ayurvedic dairy based recipes. Incase readers don’t know, black pepper and fat increase the bioavailability of the turmeric. So if you’re using a thinner less fatty plant milk, like oat milk, add a teaspoon or so of coconut oil. I’m making this now to help ease pain/swelling in my knee. I also added a pinch of ground cardamom. Thank you again Brandi! πŸ™πŸΌ
