This vegan gravy really is the best easy vegan gravy. It is perfect over mashed potatoes, is perfect, fast, and simple to make and comes together in just about 10 minutes. It is also gluten-free and oil-free. No traditional flour needed, just cornstarch.
BEST EASY VEGAN GRAVY
This easy vegan gravy really is the perfect vegan gravy and can be made in 10 minutes! My daughter and I were practically wanting to drink it. I poured so much over my vegan “buttermilk” mashed potatoes, that I think I had more gravy than actual potatoes!
It is so easy, fast, and simple to make and comes together in just about 10 minutes. It is also gluten-free. No traditional flour needed, just cornstarch. If you are looking for a more fancy gravy, then make this vegan red wine gravy with thyme and red cabernet sauvignon wine.
This easy vegan gravy is perfect all year long, for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all holidays. It can go on everything from the best vegan stuffing, potatoes, to vegan turkey, tofu, main dishes, vegan meats, and breakfast biscuits. I mean, hello classic southern biscuits and gravy!
However, my favorite way is to serve vegan mashed potatoes and gravy alongside my BBQ Lentil Loaf for the perfect plant-based meal.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED
- Low-sodium vegetable broth
- Nutritional yeast
- Garlic powder
- Low-sodium soy sauce
- Rice vinegar
- Cornstarch
- Salt and pepper
HOW TO MAKE EASY VEGAN GRAVY
Step 1. Add the ingredients to a pot and whisk well. (Reserve 1/4 of the broth to make the cornstarch slurry separately).
Step 2. Mix the 1/4 cup of broth with the cornstarch and whisk until completely smooth. Add this to the pot and whisk everything well.
Step 3. Heat over medium-high until thickened some. Remove and set aside to cool and thicken for 10 minutes.
I hope you all love this easy and fast vegan gravy as much as my daughter and I did! Let me know after you try it!

Easy 10 Minute Perfect Vegan Gravy
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups (540g) low-sodium vegetable broth, separated
- 3 tablespoons (24g) cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon (15g) low-sodium soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon rice vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- First, add only 1/4 cup of the broth to a small bowl with the cornstarch and whisk together until smooth to make a slurry. This is what will thicken the gravy. You do not want to add the cornstarch to all the broth, because it will get clumpy and be really hard to mix in smoothly and will ruin the gravy. Set aside.
- Add the remaining 2 cups of broth to a medium pot. Add the remaining ingredients: soy sauce, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, rice vinegar, salt, and pepper and whisk well.
- Now whisk in the cornstarch slurry until smooth.
- Add to the stove and turn the heat to medium-high. Once it starts to boil, slightly lower the heat and simmer, whisking often to prevent clumping at the bottom, for about 5-8 minutes or so until it begins to noticeably thicken. DO be careful about overcooking though, because as the gravy cools, it will thicken more. And if you overcook it, it will get toot thick and goopy as it cools because of the cornstarch.I like to heat it until it is just thickening and then remove from the heat.
- Cool in the pan for 10 minutes away from the heat to thicken up more and then serve right after. Whisk once more before serving over my buttermilk mashed potatoes.
- This gravy will thicken a lot in the fridge overnight or as it sits (as all gravies do), so just give it a good whisk to smoothen it back out before serving again or add a touch of broth if needed/desired.

Hi Brandy- I love this gravy recipe and plan to make it when visiting family a fight away from me. I can take the dry ingredients with me, but wondering about the rice vinegar. Don’t want to buy a bottle when only need a teaspoon for this recipe. Would regular vinegar work as well? Or lemon juice?
Yes, I think that should be fine!
My favorite gravy recipe! So easy and I always have the ingredients on hand. My non vegan friends couldn’t believe the ingredients. They are all going to make this too.
So very happy to hear this BJ!
Fabulous gravy! Added a few drops of liquid smoke and hubby LOVED it. Thanks for another wonderful recipe. And thanks to the reviewer who mentioned Nora Cooks recipe because that was on the list of possibilities.
💕
I love that Peggy, I’ve added liquid smoke as well and it’s yum!
Just made another batch of this delectable gravy for Christmas. Then had to share it with about 8 family members! Love it!!!
Loved the gravy easy to make taste awesome
This is the best & easiest gravy I have made! It is so delicious!!
Really glad it’s the best, Jan!!
This gravy is incredible! Super easy and fast to make with so much flavor. This will be my go to recipe from now on.
Yayyyy I love hearing this!!
Can I make this ahead of time and freeze?
Hi Melissa, I would not advise freezing it, since it contains cornstarch, I am not too sure how well it would freeze. Cornstarch tends to freeze weird. This is why I made the recipe to be super simple and quick, so it comes together in 10 minutes!
If I remove the nutritional yeast and replace with mushrooms will it taste bland do you think?
Hi Karen, the nutritional yeast does provide a lot of flavor, so you may need a touch more soy sauce or miso/salt etc. to make up for it.
I used to make Nora’s Easy Vegan Gravy, but this is SO much better! I wish I could go back to everybody to tell them to make your recipe instead. I do add parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme — which I dub “Thanksgiving Day Seasonings” — and it’s SO delicious.
Yay thank you so much Susan!
Amazing !!!!!! See my comment under the butter milk mash potatoes. This gravy I could eat it out of a bowl all by itself ! So good with the buttermilk mach potatoes too…..a must for any one looking for a hardy meal. Just make vegan meatloaf too.
Thank you so very much Nancy for both reviews! So happy you loved them so much!
This recipe is amazing, it’s the best I’ve found 😋, try it or your missing out
I am so happy to hear it’s the best you’ve found, yay! Thank you so much Steve!
I made this gravy for Thanksgiving and it is fabulous! I also made the buttermilk mashed potato recipe and that was fabulous too! These two recipes will be on rotation in my household for holidays and any day!
That is so amazing to hear Linda, thank you!!!
What a wonderful gravy recipe!! So easy to make in just minutes! I was even asked for the recipe at Thanksgiving dinner. Thank you so much, I always know I can count on your recipes to be amazing. ❤️
That makes me super happy to hear that everybody loved the gravy, Sandi! And that they were asked for the recipe, yay!!
Best and easiest gravy ever. It pairs perfectly with the Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes.
I’m ecstatic you think it’s the best, thank you so much Candace!!
This is just what I needed to go with our Thanksgiving dinner. I liked the ingredients and the 10 minutes it really took to make it! And I had everything in my pantry. I even made it gluten free with GF soy sauce.
My daughter was going to just use butter on their mashed potatoes, but I made this and they loved it.
I will be using the recipe for myself when I need something quick and easy.
Thanks so much Brandi!
Super easy to make and tastiest gravy I’ve ever had!! I will be making this regularly! Thank you, Vegan 8, for sharing your culinary skills with us!
